I began my square foot garden during the first week in April 2001. Square foot gardening seemed to fit our small back yard just right. Last year I planted in conventional rows. To begin this year I built the 6” high box out of cheap lumber and screwed the corners together. I then staked the corners in the ground for added strength. The square foot gardening method is much easier to prepare, plant, and maintain compared to conventional row gardening.
Inside each box I dug up about a shovel depth and turned the soil while at the same time breaking up the large pieces of dirt. I then added 2 cu. ft. of potting soil and 2 cu. ft of organic compost. |

As you can see the dark potting soil and compost need to be mixed in with the native soil until the combined soil is one uniform color. If you have a better way to mix the dirt and additives do it. This was manual labor for sure. |

By the end of the first day, this is how the garden looked! We have added 4 more square foot plots the past 3 years. |
